Growing your own veggies!

Cucumbers: Love full sun! Plant the seeds and start them indoors about 3 weeks prior to planting them outdoors.  Remember to make sure that the last frost has occurred and plant them 2 weeks after that.  Plant the seeds 1 inch deep and about 6-10 inches apart then when you move the seedlings outdoors plant them 1 foot apart.  Water often once seedlings emerge.  It can be helpful to plant them to grow up a trellis so they can avoid damage from laying on the ground.  Also, if pests get in your garden you’ll want to cover the ground with netting so they can’t dig up the seeds and surround your garden with wire fencing.  Pick them when they are about 6 inches long and they will keep in the refrigerator for 7-10 days.

Peas: They like full or partial sun.  Plant the seeds outdoors about 4-6 weeks BEFORE the last frost.  Put the seeds 1 inch deep and 2 inches apart from one another.  Light snow shouldn’t bother the peas but if the temperature drops to the teens for a few days then you may want to replant the seeds.  They don’t need too much water or fertilizer.  For crispy peas, pick them after the dew has dried in the morning and be gentle by using 2 hands.

Carrots: They like full sun.  Plant the seeds outside about 3-6 weeks BEFORE the last frost and plant them 3-4 inches apart and have the rows about a foot apart.  Fertilize about a month and a half after planting and water an inch of water total every week.  They are ready to be harvested after 2 and a half months at 1/2 inch in diameter.  After picking, twist the tops off and wash off the dirt and let air dry before storage in airtight bags in the fridge.
